Crocker Motorcycle history is quite long in American industry. But only the true facts can tell a lot about Crocker. First of all, it is worth mentioning that Al Crocker studied at Northwestern University and received doctoral degree there in the field of engineering. He began his career with the Aurora Automatic Machine Co. This company has been engaged in the development of engines under Indian license and they produced their own brand under the name Thor. He began working in the Aurora Company and was engaged in the development of the new engine, that’s when they ended the Indian deal. It is important to mention that Crocker`s development gained considerable success and, therefore, he was promoted to the Indians. Then he began to work under the direction of Paul Bigsby, but 25 years later they changed roles.
Successful developments of Crocker
Throughout 1935 Crocker developed V-twin. Then, this vehicle represented a fast and durable motorcycle, which in this case was light and agile. It was equipped with a V-twin engine with OHV cylinder and nearly ‘square’ bore / stroke. And he had a 3-speed gearbox and a molded body. The developers have equipped the first models with the Indian brake pads and gears, H-D-valve mechanism, mounted units and Indian headlights. In this case Crocker issued several cast aluminum fuel tanks, with the size of 2.5 gallons. These models are called CROCKER SMALL TANK.
In 1936, there were no any standard Croker. Each client can specify a desired volume of the engine, because the Cylinder was cast with extra thick walls and was able to be increased up to 100 CI. In this case Big Twin with 62 CI had a 55-60 horsepower. Crocker offered refund in a situation where the owner was “beaten” by the standard version, because at that time it was the fastest moto in the United States, which reached a speed of 110 MPH. In 1938, aluminum fuel tanks were enlarged and now from ‘Small Tanks’, they have grown into ‘Big Tanks’. However, in 1942, he found it difficult to work because of the war and was forced to stop the motorcycle release, and he has not resumed it in the post-war period.
The life of Small Tank
Described CROCKER SMALL TANK 1938 year of release traveled from US to Australia and stayed there until 2004. For this time it had to go through a lot of quality changes and upgrades. But it managed to save the features of its times and its character. At the same time it is equipped with a new chassis, electrical generator and brakes. Also 61 CI engine and grip have been restored. And now this is one of the legendary motorcycles of all time.
