In 1917, William Henderson decided to sell his company on manufacturing of motorcycles Henderson Motorcycle Company, but soon his passion for 4-cylinder vehicles passed into the Ace Motorcycle Company. And already in 1920, the first Ace Four was released, and it had a majority of the characteristics of Henderson. In particular, it was fitted with ‘F-head’ on top of the exhaust valve gear. However, due to respiratory upgrades the bike gained the status of the serial most agile bike in the world that year. And he could reach speeds of 90 MPH. However, sales of it were not so quickly, as the price of this machine was quite high.

And in 1927, Indian purchased the name and the rights of Ace. And in 1928 they released the Indian-Ace, which is essentially was the same bike, but was finished in red. A year later, the company has expanded the engine to 1260c, equipped it with more powerful features. And as a result, this vehicle began to match the rest of the company`s line.

Model 401, which was released in 1928preserve the original frame, however, the model 402, released in 1929, was already equipped with the new Indian tubular frame. Motor of it is characterized by 5-bearing crankshaft. This engine was present on these cars until 1935 while Indian Four Cylinder had not been presented with its new motor. In 1938 he was made a new restyling, which meant a new and improved engine, which marked a return to the original configuration 438. At the same time, the head and the cylinders were cast from aluminum and have interchangeable heads. Thanks to this fin area increased significantly. Thus, the vehicle has become faster and more powerful.

Modernizations and elimination of production


To increase comfort in 1940 the chassis has been updated. Also on today this vehicle is equipped with 16-inch wheels, and wings with already recognizable full skirts. Indian Four Cylinder was not very profitable, but it has become excellent serial for Indian leaders. Thanks to its agility, these machines were popular among the police. But with the beginning of World War II, the company ceased their production. And 1942 was the last year for this iconic vehicle. It should also be noted that described Indian Four of 1942 year of release had a chassis number 440807 and engine serial number 1. Prior to that, it was in the property R. Desaussure. And now it is a truly historic motorcycle.
